Read the chapter Content, it's all about youWe now have clarity and vision. Our mind-map is the blueprint to our website – there isn’t any design yet, that will come later. We are going to concentrate on the body of the website - the content. Essentially we `separate’ the content from the design which makes sense when you think about it. You wouldn’t choose a graphic designer to write your articles any more than you’d choose a writer to produce your design. So, we first gather all the information, sort it – then, we make it look pretty.

Each heading listed in the mind-map is going to form a page, a section or a product on our website. So let’s look at the first item we have, `news’.

News has three articles within it, `M-Wallet in the press’, `Latest Releases’ and `Special Offers’. JP is lucky in this case, as these are news articles they have already been written for him. He doesn’t however have them in electronic form so they are going to need to be re-typed. It’s time to pull out the trusty word processor. Read the rest of this entry »

Chapter 1 Part 1

“A journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step” Confucius

Ah, hello my friend, we meet again – I see you’re looking keen and ready to start. That’s great and I applaud your enthusiasm, but first we must plan our journey. For the road ahead is pitted with dangers and the unprepared will surely suffer ill fate.

Yes, just like if you were going to set out on an adventure, you will need to plan this too. You could just dive straight in if you really wanted to but believe me, you will save yourself a whole lotta time, effort and heartache – plus you will end up with much more polished product. If you plan it.

So, let’s take a peek at what we are going to cover in this chapter.

  1. Where are we going, what do we want to achieve?
  2. Content – it’s all about you
  3. Making sense of the chaos – joining it all up
  4. Picking the right tools for the right job
  5. What’s your name and where do you live?
  6. Summary and final pointers

Internet Explorer 7 Logo

Our previous tutorial dealt with synchronising bookmarks with the Firefox browser - today we look at how Internet Explorer tackles this problem. Again, there are a few different solutions that can be applied - this is just one of them.

Unlike the Firefox solution which once set up is automated, you will have to manually log onto the Favourites website to synchronise. On the plus side, it is very easy to do and once set up you are given a few nice options to play around with. Such as being able to choose which favourites you’d like to share with friends.

Firefox LogoEveryone has them, most probably have too many - but none-the-less, they are still very useful!

Bookmarks, or favourites that is.

Come across an interesting or useful site, hit Control+D (Firefox and IE) and the site is saved to an index, who’s address is ready to be easily accessed at a later date. Now that’s all fine and dandy if you are sitting at the computer you made the bookmark on, but what if you want to access your bookmarks on another computer, or if you are at an internet cafe – hell, what happens if your computer spontaneously combusts? Yes I know, you’ll have bigger worries than bookmarks on your mind – but all the same, once your NEW computer is all set up there will come a point when you suddenly realise you’d like them back. Ok smart arse, so you are one of the few that actually made a full backup. Well good for you! Read on anyway, because this is useful even if your computer DOESN’T blow up!

Picture of me, JohnnyOk, why another blog? Surely there can’t be the need for the internet to be cluttered with the ramblings of another hapless, mindless soul that thinks that what he has to say could, possibly, be of interest to any other person? Does this individual (me) really believe that he’s doing any good whatsoever rehashing a bunch of information that is already out there and freely available to anyone who is in possession of a computer, web browser and Google? Or is this just a pathetic attempt at gaining some recognition from a wider, faceless audience – racking up some kudos and possibly a few kind words from people that will probably never be met, or even spoken too…

Well, the answer is, maybe.

As this is the first post (I’m not a `serial blogger’, yet) we have yet to see.

This isn’t going to be a super techy blog, although there may occasionally be some more technical posts. No, this blog is just going to concentrate on providing nice and easy solutions to problems you might not even know you had. Hopefully it will occasionally invoke a response like “Wow Johnny, that’s really cool – I have no idea how I have lived so long without knowing this! My life now feels that little bit more complete and it’s all thanks to you and your super blog. Although such a long sentence can be abbreviated to “Oh, that’s cool.” But I shall know what you really meant ;-)

OK, so where from here Johnny, where’s this useful information that’s going to sort out problems I didn’t even know I had?!

Well, I’m afraid you’re going to have to wait until the next post – but I’ll leave you with a little nugget of information, it’s going to revolve around (wait for it…), `bookmarks, or favourites’.

Yea, alright – don’t all look so overly interested and excited. But really, it might just be useful to somebody who doesn’t know everything.

Thanks for your time everyone – see you back next time!

Johnny
